my, your, his, her, our, their

A possessive adjective accompanies a noun.

mi embarque - my shipment
tu beneficio - your benefit
nuestro arreglo - our arrangement
su sinceridad - his, her, their or your sincerity
su padre - his, her, their or your father
sus padres - his, her, their or your parents
sus fondos - his, her, their or your money

Note! The possessive adjective must
agree with the number of items:

mi libro - my book
mis libros - my two books

The nosotros and vosotros forms change in
gender as well;

nuestro libro - our book
nuestra mesa - our desk

nuestras familias - our families
nuestros refrescos - our soft drinks

Mi cumpleaños fue el ocho de abril. - My birthday was April 8th.
Mi padre era guardia. - My father used to be a policeman.
Mi madre llegaba cada año en abril. - My mother used to arrive every year in April.
Mi hermana partió en mayo. - My sister departed in May.

Yo tenía mis dudas. - I was having my doubts.
Yo mentía a mis padres cada día. - I used to lie to my parents every day.
Tina conoció a mis abuelos. - Tina met my grandparents.
Mis clases eran largas. - My classes used to be long.

Su amiga estaba loca. - Her friend was crazy.
Los muchachos compraron un regalo para su amigo. - The boys bought a gift for their friend.
María visitó a su abuela. - Mary visited her grandmother.
Las muchachas visitaron a su abuela. - The girls visited their grandmother.
Él dio su vida por mí. - He gave his life for me.

Él nunca pensó en sus amigos. - He never thought of his friends.
Él envió dinero a sus hijos. - He sent money to his children.
Julia persiguió sus sueños. - Julia pursued her dreams.

Nuestro negocio necesitaba innovación. - Our business needed innovation.

Nuestro perro comía demasiado. - Our dog used to eat too much.
Esa casa era nuestra. - That house used to be ours.
Nuestro hermano era el presidente. - Our brother used to be the president.

Notes for the Tutor

  • The possessive adjectives express possession of the person or object they precede. These adjectives have to agree in gender and number (mas./fem. - sing./plural)
  • The student should repeat these sentences to practice vocabulary and improve pronunciation. Remember the most important part of this course is that the student speaks.
