Present Subjunctive

Present Subjunctive

Use the present subjunctive to express influence over actions that subject would or would not like somebody else to do, but cannot directly control. The following formula is often used:

Subject 1 + verb of influence (ind) + que + Subject 2 + action to be done (subj)

Below is an example sentence using the present subjunctive:
(Yo) quiero que (Uds) vengan mañana.
I want you (all) to come tomorrow.

Compare the use of the present subjunctive above with the use of the present indicative below:

(Yo) quiero venir mañana.
I want to come tomorrow.

Let's look at additional examples of the present subjunctive:

Es preciso que le hables.
It's necessary that you talk to him.

Necesito que usted firme esto.
I need you to sign this.

¿Quiere que sea testigo?
Do you want me to be a witness?

No importa que sea de otro país.
It doesn’t matter if it's from another county.

Necesitamos que usted hable con el investigador de incendios.
We need you to talk to the fire investigator.

Me gusta que la habitación sea tranquila.
I like that the room is quiet.
