Review of stem-changing verbs e to ie  



Gramática
The student should recall that for certain verbs, the
letter (e) changes to (ie) in the present tense
(with the exception of nosotros and vosotros).

These verbs are known as e to ie stem-changing verbs, and remember we call them shoe verbs.

Present tense forms of preferir (to prefer)

yo prefiero (I prefer) nosotros preferimos (we prefer)
tú prefieres (you prefer) vosotros preferís (you guys prefer)
Ud./él/ella prefiere (you prefer, he/she prefers) Uds./ellos/ ellas prefieren (you all/they prefer)

Present tense forms of entender (to understand)

yo entiendo (I understand) nosotros entendemos (we understand)
tú entiendes (you understand) vosotros entendéis (you guys understand)
Ud./él/ella entiende (you understand, he/she understands) Uds./ellos/ ellas entienden (you all/they understand)

Present tense forms of pensar (to think)

yo pienso (I think) nosotros pensamos (we think)
tú piensas (you think) vosotros pensáis (you guys think)
Ud./él/ella piensa (you think, he/she thinks) Uds./ellos/ ellas piensan (you all/they think)

Sentences with preferir
Yo prefiero ir en la mañana. - I would prefer to go in the morning.
¿Prefiere un carro de dos puertas? - Do you all prefer a car with two doors?
Preferimos un carro de cuatro puertas. - We prefer a car with four doors.
Ella prefiere el carro rojo. - She prefers the red car
Prefieres la casa grande. - You prefer the big house.
Ellos prefieren comer ensalada. - They prefer to eat salad.
¿Qué modelo prefiere usted? - Which model do you prefer?
¿Prefiere usted trabajar solo? - Do you prefer to work alone?
Prefiero el bocadillo sin lechuga. - I prefer the sandwich without lettuce.
Prefiero pan integral. - I prefer whole wheat bread.

Sentences with entender

¿Entiende el diseño? - Do you understand the design?
Sí señora, entiendo. - Yes Ma’am, I understand
¿Todos entienden la tarea? - Does everybody understand the assignment?
Si, yo entiendo la situación del clima. - Yes, I understand the climate situation.
No entiendo lo que Pedro dice. - I don't understand what Peter is saying.
Yo entiendo a Juan porque el habla despacio. - I understand John because he speaks slowly.
Ellos entienden al profesor. - They understand the professor.
Entiendo las instrucciones. - I understand the instructions.
Entiendes la lección. - You understand the lesson.
Maria no entiende a la maestra. - Mary doesn't understand the teacher.

Sentences with pensar
Pienso que puse mi cartera sobre la caja. - I think I put my wallet on the counter.
Nosotros pensamos viajar a Italia. - We are planning on traveling to Italy.
Yo pienso que es mejor viajar a Brasil. - I think it will be better to travel to Brazil.
¿Porqué piensas eso? - Why do you think that?
Pienso en ti siempre. - I always think about you.
Pensamos regresar el jueves. - We are thinking of coming back on Thursday.
Ella piensa en su hermana. - She thinks about her sister.
¿Cuándo piensa regresar? - When do you plan to return?
Ellos piensan comer a las seis de la tarde. - They are thinking of eating at 6:00 in the afternoon.
Piensas siempre en los riesgos. - You always think about the risks.
