The pronouns me, te, le, nos, os, les are called indirect object pronouns.

me to me, for me (singular) nos to us, for us (plural)
te to you, for you (singular) os to you guys, for you guys (plural)
le to, for you/him/her (singular) les to you all/them, for you all/them (plural)
  • *Note in the examples below that Spanish uses the indirect object pronouns
    where in English they would be part of a prepositional phrase.

    • Sentences

    Juan me da una camisa. - John gives a shirt to me.
    Juan te da una camisa. - John is giving to you a shirt.
    Juan le da una camisa a usted. - John is giving to you a shirt.
    Juan le da una camisa a él. - John is giving to him a shirt.
    Juan le da una camisa a ella. - John is giving to her a shirt.
    María nos da unas camisas. - Mary is giving to us some shirts.
    María os da unas camisas. - Mary is giving to you guys some shirts.
    María les da unas camisas. - Mary is giving to you all some shirts
    María les da unas camisas. - Mary is giving to them some shirts.
    Mi hermana me compra un vestido. - My sister buys a dress for me.
    Nuestro tío nos escribe correos electrónicos. - Our uncle writes emails to us.
    Victoria les envia un regalo. - Victoria sends a gift to them.
    Le compro unas libros a Juan. - I buy books for Juan.
    Ellos les compran regalos a sus hijos. - They buy gifts to their children.
    Yo te compro una manzana. - I buy an apple for you.
    Tú le compras un libro a Rosa. - You buy a book for Rosa.

    Notes for the Tutor

    • The indirect object answers the question to whom or for whom.
    • The student should understand the indirect object pronouns and repeat these simple sentences to practice and improve pronunciation.
    • With the help of the tutor the student should make his or her own sentences to make sure that the concept has been fully understood.
    • Suggested Homework: The student should make 10 more sentences to review in the next session with the tutor.
