Present Tense - Regular -ar Verbs

Regular -ar Verbs

Regular verbs follow predictable patterns. Let's consider the present tense of a regular "ar" verb. To determine the correct forms of a verb, we start with its infinitive form. The infinitive form of the verb meaning (to walk) in Spanish is caminar.

Take off the -ar ending:
caminar - ar = camin

Now we add on one of the present tense endings: o, as, a, amos, áis, an
camin + (ending) --> camino, caminas, camina, caminamos, caminan

Let's look at some example sentences:
Yo camino al restaurante para cenar.
I'm walking to the restaurant to have dinner.
El camina varias veces al dia.
He walks several times a day.
Nosotros también caminamos.
We also walk.
