Let's consider the present tense of a regular (er) verb. The verb meaning (must, should, ought to) in Spanish is deber.

Take off the -er ending:
deber - er = deb

Now we add on one of the present tense endings: o, es, e, emos, éis, en
deb + (ending) --> debo, debes, debe, debemos, debéis, deben

Let's look at some example sentences:

Debes estar aqui.
You ought to be here. (You should be here.)
Debe estar perfecto.
You ought to be perfect.
Debe llamar si no puede venir al trabajo.
You must call if you can't come to work.
Debemos evacuar el edificio?
Should we evacuate the building?
