Overview

The verb empezar (conjugation) is irregular. It means to start or to begin. In the present, the second e changes to ie with the exception of nosotros/vosotros. The conjugation in the present is shown in the table below.

yo empiezo (I start)
empiezas (you start)
Ud./él/ella empieza (you/he/she starts)
nosotros (as) empezamos (we start)
vosotros (as) empezáis (you guys start)
Uds./ellos/ellas empiezan (you all/they start)

Sentences using empezar in the present tense

Está bien, pero ¿cuándo empiezo?

It's fine, but when do I start?

La escuela empieza en agosto.

The school starts in August.

En marzo empieza la primavera.

Spring starts in March.

Empezamos a gritar.

We begin to scream.

Mis clases empiezan a las siete y media de la mañana.

My classes start at 7:30am.

¿Puede empezar mañana?

Can you start tomorrow?
