Reflexive Verbs

There are several ways to express the idea of "become" or "get" (e.g. become/get nervous) in Spanish. Some reflexive verbs can be used to express this idea. Generally, these verbs have to do with changes of attitudes or behavior.

Some Common Reflexive Verbs

alegrarse - to become happy
animarse - to become encouraged
asustarse - to become frightened
atrasarse - to get behind/delayed
callarse - to become quiet
cansarse - to become tired
confundirse - to become confused
desesperarse - to become disappointed
emocionarse - to become emotional
enamorarse - to fall in love
enfadarse - to become angry
enfermarse - to become sick
fastidiarse - to become annoyed
hartarse - to become tired of something
irritarse - to become irritated
mejorarse - to become better
molestarse - to become upset
nublarse - to become cloudy
ofenderse - to become offended
perderse - to get lost
secarse - to dry oneself
sorprenderse - to become surprised

Example Sentences

Nos perdemos en los mercados de Tepito.
We got lost in the markets of Tepito.

Su condición se ha mejorado desde ayer.
His condition has gotten better since yesterday.

Me harté de hacer la misma cosa todos los días.
I got sick of doing the same thing everyday.

Common expressions

In addition to the use of the reflexive to express a change in one's nature, there are some expressions that are quite common. For example:

hacerse rico - to get/become rich

ponerse rojo - to turn red
(may also be used with other colors)

ponerse furioso - to become furious

volverse loco - to go crazy
