The past perfect indicative is formed
using the formula below:

imperfect conjugation of haber
+
past participle
=
past perfect indicative

The past participle is formed with the stem
of the verb plus:
ado - for -ar verbs
ido - for -er and -ir verbs

hablar ---> hablado (spoken)
comer ---> comido (eaten)
vivir ---> vivido (lived)

Past perfect for hablar (to speak)

yo había hablado (I had spoken) nosotros (as) habíamos hablado (we had spoken)
habías hablado (you had spoken) vosotros (as) habíais hablado (you guys had spoken)
él/ella/ Ud. había hablado (he/she/you had spoken) ellos/ellas/Uds. habían hablado (you all/they had spoken)

Sentences
Yo creía que Juan había hablado con el abogado hoy.
I thought that John had spoken with the lawyer today.

No había hablado con Ernesto desde que volvió de Francia.
I hadn't talked with Ernesto since he got back from France.

No había hablado con Ernesto desde hacía mucho tiempo.
I hadn't talked with Ernesto for a long time.

No había hablado con Ernesto desde el año pasado.
I hadn't talked with Ernesto since last year.

Carlos había hablado con el maestro sobre el asunto.
Carlos had talked with the teacher about the matter.

Otoniel y Juan habían hablado ya de eso.
Otoniel and Juan had already talked about this.

Ellas ya habían hablado que irían a Paris.
They had already talked that they would go to Paris.

Yo había hablado con mi mamá el año pasado.
I had talked with my mom last year.
