For some verbs, the letter (o) changes to (ue) in the present
tense (with the exception of nosotros and vosotros).
These verbs are known as "o to ue stem-changing verbs".

One of these verbs is poder (to be able to).

Forms of the verb poder (to be able to)

yo puedo (I am able to) nosotros (as) podemos (we are able to)
tú puedes (you are able to) vosotros (as) podéis (you all are able to)
Ud./él/ella puede (you/he/she are/is able to) Uds./ellos/ellas pueden (you/they are able to)
  • NB: This verb is a "shoe verb" and is irregular but
    in a predictable pattern. The forms in bold make the shape
    of a shoe and these are the only forms in which the stem changes.

    -ar verbs
    almorzar - to eat lunch
    contar - to count, to tell a story
    recordar - to remember, to remind
    volar - to fly

    -er verbs
    devolver - to return an object
    mover - to move
    volver - to return

    -ir verbs
    dormir - to sleep
    morir - to die

    Sentences with poder
    No puedo rechazar la oferta. - I can't refuse the offer.
    No puedo encontrar las llaves. - I can't find the keys.
    ¿Puedo hablar con Laura? - May I talk to Laura?
    ¿Puedo enviar un fax? - May I send a fax?
    ¿Puedo dejar un mensaje? - May I leave a message?
    Podemos hablar con él. - We can talk to him.
    Él no puede caminar. - He can't walk.
    ¿Usted puede recomendarme un restaurante? - Can you recommend a restaurant?
    ¿Dónde puedo encontrar agua? - Where can I find water?
    Tú puedes confiar en él. - You can trust him.
    ¿Puedes comprar los boletos? - Can you buy the tickets?
    Yo no puedo comprar los boletos. - I can't buy the tickets.
    No puedo quitar la mancha. - I can't remove the stain.
    Nosotros no podemos resolver este problema. - We can't solve this problem.
    Ellos no pueden resolver este problema. - They can't solve this problem.
    Ella no puede levantar su maleta. - She cannot lift her suitcase.
    No podemos levantar esta caja. - We can't lift this box.

    Sentences with -ar verbs
    Yo almuerzo todos los días en la oficina. - I eat lunch in the office every day.
    ¿Almuerzas afuera con frecuencia? - Do you eat lunch out frequently?
    ¿Almuerzas a la misma hora cada día? - Do you eat lunch at the same time each day?
    Gonzalo y yo almorzamos en el castillo. - Gonzalo and I eat lunch in the castle.
    Marcos y Maritza almuerzan en el parque. - Marcos and Maritza eat lunch in the park.
    El avión vuela alto. - The plane flies high.
    ¿Vuelas en avión con frecuencia? - Do you fly frequently.
    ¿Vuela Marta contigo? - Does Marta fly with you?
    El maestro cuenta una historia a los alumnos. - The teacher tells a story to the students.
    Yo cuento el dinero de mi padre. - I count my father's money.
    Ella cuenta los tomates. - She counts the tomatoes.

    Sentences with -er verbs

    ¿Cuándo vuelves a la universidad? - When do you come back to the university?
    Volvemos cada año. - We return each year.
    Siempre volvemos a la guerra civil. - We always return to the civil war.
    Los hombres siempre vuelven. - Men always return.
    ¿Por qué los hombres siempre vuelven? - Why do men always return?
    Hay épocas que nunca vuelven. - There are times that never return.
    Mis abuelos vuelven hoy de Italia. - My grandparents return today from Italy.
    Ella vuelve a su ciudad. - She returns to her city.
    Vuelves cada mes para ver a tu hermana. - You return each month to see your sister.

    Sentences with -ir verbs
    Cuando duermo, sueño que estoy bailando. - When I sleep, I dream I am dancing.
    ¿Cuántas horas por día duermes? - How many hours a day do you sleep?
    ¿Duermes con la puerta abierta? - Do you sleep with the door open?
    ¿Duermes menos de lo necesario? - Do you sleep less than necessary?
    Los niños pobres duermen en las calles. - The poor children sleep in the streets.
    Ellas duermen en la casa de la abuela. - They sleep in grandmother's house.
    Él duerme hasta tarde los domingos. - He sleeps late on Sundays.
    Él duerme tranquilamente. - He sleeps peacefully.
    Ella duerme con su perro. - She sleeps with her dog.

    Notes for the Tutor

    • The student should repeat these simple sentences to practice and improve pronunciation.
    • The tutor and student should make a conversation according to the needs of the student using these newly presented verbs.
