Large school in cramped quartes and more like a learning mill with scant attention paid to individual student needs. The instructor I had was polished and technically astute but impersonal. I could live with that, but my main complaint was inadequate lodging and no attempt to involve students coming to a foreign land in activities. The director of the school actually forgot to pick me up despite several reminder emails. I was left hanging at the airport for over 3 hours. Very disappointing experience.

I had a great experience at this school. The director, Rafael Linares, is friendly, organized, and helpful. The teachers are excellent and the school provides a variety of interesting activities, some free, some at reasonable cost. My host family was fabulous. The city of La Ceiba itself I'll remember as HOT, but the area around La Ceiba offers interesting day trips and outdoor activities and the Bay Islands are just a ferry boat away. Highly recommended.

I've been to a total of 5 Spanish schools in Central America and would rate CASS at the bottom. Unfortunately, I didn't' have a particularly satisfying experience at the school and wasn't able to engage like I had at the other schools I attended. To make matters worse, I found La Ceiba to be a gross, smelly port town surrounded by a poop-filled canal. Yeech! To each his own, I guess.

The program is well organized and the teachers are all great. There were about 16 students in July/August and everyone is very friendly. La Ceiba isn't a great city, but it's got some fun places and there is a lot to do from here. Having three meals at the homestay was a great way to save some money as well.

I am giving this school all 5 stars because I feel the need to balance out some of the negative comments! I first went to study at CASS last summer. I stayed for a month, taking 4hrs of private spanish classes per day, and volunteering at a site Rafael (CASS director) set me up with--a physical therapy clinic called CRILA. I came to this school specifically for the value--it cost only $200/wk to study 20hrs of spanish, and stay at a great homestay where you are fed 3 meals a day! I had an awesome teacher--you should ask for Diana--super sweet, patient lady :) They also plan fun activities like salsa dancing, trips to the bay islands, and hiking. I loved la Ceiba so much I brought 11 other students back with me for 2 wks over winter break. Don't listen to the people who say it's a hole--you just have to be willing to explore. I mean...I <$1000 covered living in a foreign country, taking spanish, volunteering in a physical therapy clinic, and flight. Can't beat that :)
