Both ser and estar can be translated as "to be."
The verb ser is used to indicate an attribute,
an inherent quality that is not likely to change.

Los pollos son animales pacíficos.
Chickens are peaceful animals.

The verb estar is used to indicate a temporary condition
which is likely to change.

Los pollos están ricos.
The chickens are delicious.

The verb ser is often used to make a general statment while
estar makes a very specific statement.

El mole poblano es un plato típico de México.
Mole is a dish of Mexican origin.

El mole poblano está muy sabroso.
The mole is very flavorful.

Sentences with estar

Los pasteles están ricos. - The cakes are delicious.
Estos chocolates no están sabrosos. - These chocolates are not flavorful.
Las hamburguesas están ricas. - The hamburgers are delicious.
Las manzanas están sabrosas. - The apples are delicious.
Los platos están sabrosos. - The dishes are flavorful.
Estos frijoles están sabrosos. - These beans are flavorful.

Sentences with ser
Los tomates son grandes. - Tomatoes are big.
Los pasteles de la pastelería son pequeños. - The cakes from the bakery are small.
