Example Sentences with Reflexive Verbs

A reflexive verb is one that takes the subject as an object. In English it's expressed with: myself, yourself, herself, etc.

In Spanish we use the object pronouns for all the different subjects except for the third person (singular and plural), which will use 'se'. The placement is the same as with object pronouns (before a conjugated verb, attached to the infinitive or present progressive). Let's look at some sentences using reflexive verbs:

levantarse (to get up)

Yo me levanto a las siete.
I get up at seven. (Literally: I get myself up at seven)

Tú te levantas a las siete.
You get up at seven. (Literally: You get yourself up at seven)

despertarse (to wake up)

Lorena se despierta a las siete.
Lorena wakes up at seven. (Literally: Lorena wakes herself up at seven)

Ellos se despiertan a las siete.
They wake up at seven. (Literally: They wake themselves up at seven)

(despertarse) - Los días de trabajo, Lorena se despierta a las cinco.

(levantarse) - Ella se levanta a las siete y cuarto.

(ducharse) - Primero, ella va al baño donde se ducha por diez minutos.

(bañarse) - Cuando ella tiene más tiempo, se baña.

(secarse)(peinarse) - Después, se seca bien todo el cuerpo y se peina.

(vestirse)(pintarse)(ponerse) - Entonces, Lorena se viste, se pinta la cara y se pone un poco de perfume.

(lavarse) - Luego ella se lava los dientes y sale de casa.
