Expressing Weather Conditions
Weather conditions are often expressed with the verb hacer in Spanish. These generally correspond to English expressions that use the verb to be. For example:
- Hace calor/frío/sol/viento. It's hot/cold/sunny/windy.
Hace buen tiempo/mal tiempo. It's nice out/bad weather.
Other weather conditions use the verb estar. For example:
- Está nublado/fresco/húmedo. It's cloudy/cool/humid.
Verbs that refer to weather conditions are only conjugated in the third person singular. For example:
NEVAR
- Nieva mucho en Minnesota. It snows a lot in Minnesota.
LLOVER
- Llueve mucho en Seattle. It rains a lot in Seattle.
NUBLARSE
- Se nubló a las dos de la tarde. It got cloudy at two p.m.
LLOVIZNAR
- Lloviznaba todo el día. It drizzled all day.
Vocabulary
congelarse - to freeze (oneself)
contaminación (f) - pollution/smog
