Formal commands are used with people you would address
with usted or ustedes. These commands are formed using
the present tense yo form.

for -ar verbs
drop the o ending and add -e or -en

Examples:
yo estudio --> ¡Estudie usted! and ¡Estudien ustedes!

for -er & -ir verbs
drop the o ending and add -a or -an

Examples:
yo leo --> ¡Lea usted! and ¡Lean ustedes!
yo escribo --> ¡Escriba usted! and ¡Escriban ustedes!

Note!
Stem changing verbs and verbs with irregular yo forms
are formed in the same way.

Examples:
yo cierro --> ¡Cierre la ventana!
yo sigo --> ¡Siga Ud. todo derecho!

Gramática
Verbs ending in -car, -gar, and -zar
have spelling changes.

yo busco --> ¡Busque usted! and ¡Busquen ustedes!
yo juego --> ¡Juegue usted! and ¡Jueguen ustedes!
yo empiezo --> ¡Empiece usted! and ¡Empiecen ustedes!

Five verbs have irregular formal commands.

dar --> dé, den
estar --> esté, estén
saber --> sepa, sepan
ser --> sea, sean
ir --> vaya, vayan

Gramática
Reflexive pronouns come before negative commands
or are attached to affirmative commands.

No se sienten allí.
Do not sit there.

Siéntense aquí, por favor.
Sit here, please.

¡Hagan la comida! - You all make the food!
¡Cierre la puerta! - You close the door!
¡Cierren la ventana! - You all close the window!
¡Camine más rápido! - You walk faster!
¡No camine rápido! - Don't you all walk fast!
¡Caminen más despacio! - You all walk more slowly!
¡Trabaje usted! - You work!
¡Trabajen ustedes! - You all work!

Sentences
¡Lávense la manos! - You all wash your hands!
¡No se laven las manos! - You all do not wash your hands!
¡Lávese las manos! - You wash your hands!
¡Báñese! - You take a shower!
¡No se bañe! - Don't you take a shower!
¡Báñense! - You all take a shower!
¡Levántese! - You get up!
¡No se levante! - Don't you get up!
¡No se levanten! - Don't you all get up!
