Reflexive Verbs

Whenever the subject of the sentence (the doer of the action) and the object of the sentence (the receiver of the action) refer to the same person, we use the reflexive form of the verb.

  • I dress myself every morning. (Reflexive)
  • I dress my son every morning. (Non-reflexive)

The infinitive form of a reflexive verb is written with the reflexive pronoun "se". For example: afeitarse (to shave oneself), lavarse (to wash oneself), and llamarse (to call oneself).

Below are example sentences using reflexive verbs:

El se lava. - He washes himself.
Ellos se lavan las manos.
They wash their hands.
Me llamo Jennifer. - My name is Jennifer.
Se llama Rebecca. - Her name is Rebecca.
¿Le empeora el dolor si se acuesta?
Does the pain get worse if you lie down?
Juan y Cecilia quieren vestirse de pies a cabeza.
Juan and Cecilia want to dress themselves feet to head.

Yo me afeito.
I shave myself.

Tú te afeitas muy rapido.
You shave yourself very quickly.

Guillermo se afeita muy despacio.
Bill shaves himself very slowly.

Nosotros nos afeitamos toda mañana.
We shave ourselves every morning.
