Overview

When we use the preposition a with people and animals as direct objects, we call it "personal a".

(Ud.) necesita ver a su doctor.
      You need to see your doctor. (formal)
Yo saco a mi perrito todos los días.
      I take my puppy out every day.
Juan te presento a María.
      Juan, let me introduce María to you.

Exceptions:
We don't use the "personal a" with tener, necesitar, and haber.

Tengo dos hijos.
      I have two children.
¡Necesito un médico!
      I need a doctor!
En mi familia hay seis personas.
      In my family there are six people.
