The preterite tense of haber is hubo.
Hubo means there was or there were.

Sentences using haber in the preterite tense

Hubo una explosión.
    There was an explosion.

Hubo más gente de la que invité.
    There were more people than I invited.

Hubo más que 50.000 espectadores.
    There were more than 50,000 spectators.

Hubo una tormenta de nieve anoche.
    There was a snowstorm last night.

Hubo muchos heridos durante la manifestación.
     There were many injured during the protest.
