Use of the Written Accent  

Accents

Spanish words fall into four categories according to the way they are pronounced:

agudas: stress in last syllable [ full lesson ]
azul - blue
amar - to love
jamás - never

graves: stress in second to last syllable [ full lesson ]
silla - chair
cárcel - jail
cohete - rocket

esdrújulas: stress in third to last [ full lesson ]
médico - doctor
lámpara - lamp
cómico - comedian

sobreesdrújulas: stress in any syllable before the third to last. [ full lesson ]
fácilmente - easily
débilmente - weakly
