Gustar and Similar Verbs

A few points to take into consideration when dealing with the verb GUSTAR and its cronies - caer bien, caer mal, encantar, faltar * (to lack), fascinar, hacer falta * (to need), impresionar, interesar, molestar * (to be a bother), parecer, quedar * (to have remaining/left over).

1. Never use GUSTAR in the first or second person. In other words, never say:

Yo gustO or tú gustAS.

Use gustar ONLY in the 3rd person singular or plural. Bearing just this in mind will get you out of a lot of trouble. Deciding whether the verb should be singular or plural is really quite simple, as you will soon see.

2. GUSTAR and friends ALWAYS require an INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUN.

3. It is customary to begin the sentence with the indirect object and gustar
(or similar verbs) and placing the subject after.

Me gusta esta casa.

Me gustan estas casas.

4. When dealing with gustar and similar verbs, instead of saying:

I like ......
Say that something is pleasing to you (or whoever the subject happens to be). For example, if you want to say:

I like classical music.
Change to: Classical music is pleasing to me. Me gusta la música clásica.

5. When dealing with people, be careful how you use gustar. Gustar used with people means to be physically attracted to them. Of course, if this is what you actually mean, then by all means go ahead and use gustar. However, chances are that your sentiments may not be that strong. In Spanish the expressions: caer bien or caer mal are used instead.
