Verb ser is used to refer to the place a person is from and verb estar is used to refer to the place a person is located. Look the examples:

· Maria es de España – Maria is from Spain · Maria está en España – Maria is in Spain
Verb ser is also used to refer to the nationality of a person. When writing nationalities and language it is not necessary to use capital letters.
· Maria es española – Maria is Spanish · John es americano – John is American
