The imperative mood expresses direct commands, requests, and prohibitions.

In many circumstances, using the imperative mood may sound blunt or even rude, so it is often used with care.

The imperative mood expresses direct commands, requests, and prohibitions. In many circumstances, using the imperative mood may sound blunt or even rude, so it is often used with care.

Direct Commands in Spanish (Imperatives)

Let's start our discussion of commands, which are sometimes called "imperatives",y by dividing them into two groups.

We know that when we speak with someone in Spanish, we have to decide which form of "you" to use. When we know someone well enough to call him/her by the FIRST NAME, we use the word "tú". If we feel that it is proper to use a title and the last name (for example: Mr. García, Mrs. Fernández, Senator González, President Fujimori), out of respect for the persons age or social position, we use the word "usted".

Pluperfect (Past Perfect Subjunctive) - Pluscuamperfecto de Subjuntivo

  Spanish Pluperfect (Past Perfect Subjunctive)

To form the "pretérito pluscuamperfecto" (past perfect) of the subjunctive mood, we need to use the auxiliary verb "haber" (have) in its "pretérito imperfecto" (past simple) of the subjunctive mood and the past participle of another verb.

First, to form the past participle of the regular verbs in Spanish, we need to take the verb as we find it in the dictionary and remove the last two letters.

Then, if the verb ends in:

-ar we will add the ending -ado
-er or -ir we will add the ending -ido

  haber

haber

yo

hubiera

Imperfect (Past Subjunctive) - Imperfecto de Subjuntivo

  Spanish Imperfect (Past Subjunctive)

The imperfect subjunctive is formed by taking the third person plural of the preterite minus -on.

hablaron hablar-
comieron comier-
vivieron vivier-

To this stem you add the following endings:
-a, -as, -a, -amos, -ais, -an

One of the most common uses of the imperfect subjunctive is in a si clause. In such a clause it has a hypothetical meaning.

Si yo fuera el presidente...
If I were the president...

Si tuviera mucho dinero...
If I had a lot of money...

Si hablara cinco idiomas...
If I spoke five languages...

Present Subjunctive - Presente de Subjuntivo

  Spanish Present Subjunctive

One of the uses of the subjunctive mood is to persuade someone to do something.

For example, if you call a friend and discover that he is not at home, you might ask whoever answered the phone to leave your friend a message.

In Spanish, such a sentence requires use of the subjunctive mood.

For example:

Dile que me devuelva mi libro mañana.
Tell him to return my book to me tomorrow.

Sí señor, dígale por favor que lleve mi disco
de los jaguares a la escuela mañana.
Yes sir, please tell him to bring my Jaguars
CD to school tomorrow.

Notice that in each example the speaker is asking someone to do something. If the speaker were simply giving information then the subjunctive mood would not be used.

[ view full lesson ]

Conjunctions - Las Conjunciones

  Spanish Conjunctions

In order to speak Spanish more fluidly you should be able to employ some key expressions that will help you connect your ideas. Some common phrases that are used to express a contrast between one idea and another include:

Sin Embargo

No obstante

A pesar de (que)

De todos modos

Aunque

Although there usually isn't a single word-for-word translation of these terms, they do tend to correspond to specific words in English.

Sin embargo - is used like "however," or "nevertheless."

Double Object Pronouns - Pronombres de Doble Objeto

  Spanish Double Object Pronouns

We have looked at both Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns and learned that we place them either directly before a conjugated verb or attach them to an infinitive, a gerund or a command.

But what happens when we have both direct and indirect object pronouns in one sentence?

We have already studied the two kinds of object pronouns. They are the "direct" object pronoun and the "indirect" object pronoun. If you don't remember these well, it would be a good idea for you to review them before beginning this lesson.

To start, let's review what we mean by the "direct" object. Look at the following sentence and decide what word is the "direct" object.

Object Pronouns - Pronombres de Objeto Directo y Objeto Indirecto

  Direct & Indirect Object Pronouns

Pronouns are words that we use to replace nouns in sentences. The reason that we use them is to avoid unnecessary repetition. Take a look at the following conversation.

"Do you have the book?"
"No, I don't have the book."
"Do you know if Mary has the book?"
"No, I don't know if Mary has the book."

Doesn't that sound odd to you? The reason that it sounds so strange is that we aren't used to so much repetition in our sentences. In order to avoid that, we frequently use pronouns to replace nouns once we have made it clear what we are talking about.

Instead of repeating "the book" so many times, we would probably replace the phrase with the word "it". Read the following lines and see if it sounds better to you.

"Do you have the book?"
"No, I don't have it."

[ view full lesson ]

An indirect object precedes the direct object and tells to whom or for whom the action of the verb is done and who is receiving the direct object.

There must be a direct object to have an indirect object. Indirect objects are usually found with verbs of giving or communicating like give, bring, tell, show, take, or offer.

An indirect object is always a noun or pronoun which is not part of a prepositional phrase.

Example:

She gave me the report.
- Who received the report? me
- What is the indirect object? - me

"me" is the indirect object because it tells
us who the report was given to.
