There are two forms of the past in Spanish.The imperfect past and the preterite. This lesson focuses on the preterite which indicates that an event took place at some point in the past and it is a completed finished action.

La Maleta - The Suitcase

Thelma: ¿De quién es la maleta?
To whom does the bag belong?

Juan Carlos: Es de ella.
It's hers.

Thelma: ¿Dónde está ella?
Where is she?

Juan Carlos: Ella está en la cafetería.
She is in the cafeteria.

Thelma: ¿Cuándo piensa regresar?
When do you think she will be back?

Juan Carlos: Cuando termine su cóctel de frutas.
When she finishes her fruit cocktail.

Thelma: ¿Con quién está acompañada?
Who is she with?

Juan Carlos: Con su amiga.
With her friend.

Thelma: ¿Por qué dejo la maleta aquí?
Why did she leave the suitcase here?

Juan Carlos: Ella no quiere cargar la maleta.
She doesn't want to carry the suitcase.

Thelma: ¿A quién recomendó la maleta?
To whom did she ask to look after the bag?

Juan Carlos: A mí.
To me.

Thelma: ¿Cuántos minutos tienes de cuidar la maleta?
How many minutes have you been looking after the lugagge?

Juan Carlos: Tengo 20 minutos de cuidar la maleta.
I have been watching the suitcase for twenty minutes.
