Ordinal numbers are numbers that show the
order or position of something.

Examples:

first - primero
fifth - quinto
tenth - décimo

As in English, ordinal numbers come before the noun.
Ordinal numbers agree in gender with the noun they modify.

The words that mean first and third have two different forms:
primer/primero - first
and tercer/tercero - third

(primer or tercer)
is used when a masculine noun follows the number:

el primer día - the first day
el tercer mes - the third month

primero or tercero
is used when the number is used by itself:

el primero - the first
el tercero - the third

with the noun's being implied from the context.

4th Cuarto 70th Septuagésimo
5th Quinto 80th Octogésimo

Sentences
Primero, escoja la hoja de cálculo. - First, select the spreadsheet.
Primero, utilice la cultivadora en la tierra. - First, use the tiller in the soil.
Es el primero de enero. - It is January 1.
Hoy es el cuadragésimo aniversario de bodas. - Today is the 40th wedding anniversary.
Con su permiso; yo deseo hablar primero. - Excuse me; I want to speak first.
*NB- In informal styles, written and spoken, ordinal forms over tenth are avoided and the ordinary cardinal number is used, e.g. el veinticinco aniversario, la trescientas cincuenta reúnion del comité.

Es la décima vez que te lo digo. - It is the tenth time I tell you.
¿Es este tu primer viaje a los Estados Unidos? - Is this your first visit to the USA?
El primer diente de leche está empezando a salir. - The first baby tooth is starting to come in.
El próximo mes es el centésimo aniversario de la ciudad. - Next month the city will celebrate 100 years.
Es la unidad número 104, en el primer piso. - It is unit # 104, on the first floor.

Nosotros siempre le ponemos al cliente en primer lugar. - We always put the customer first.
Cruzamos la frontera el primer día del mes. - We crossed the border on the first of the month.
Gloria repitió el primer curso. - Gloria repeated course one.
Es el primer mostrador a la izquierda. - It's the first counter to the left.
¡Ahh! es el primer turno. - Ahh, it’s the first shift
Puede trabajar el primer turno. - You can work first shift.

Las camisas para hombres están en el segundo piso. - The shirts for men are on the second floor.
Puede trabajar el primer turno o el segundo turno. - You can work first or second shift.
Pidió el segundo vestido. - She asked for the second dress.
¡Hay un incendio en el quinto piso! - There is a fire on floor five!
Están en el quinto piso al lado de las computadoras. - They're on the fifth floor next to the computers.

¡Este es el quinto fallo que tengo que corregir hoy! - This is the fifth mistake that I must correct today!
El rey Jorge sexto prometió ayudar a las víctimas. - King George VI promised to help the victims.
