Uses of the Verbs Ser and Estar

ESTAR, from the Latin stare associated with the words state and station, is used:
A. to express location (ubicación): El profesor no está aquí. Ahí está el problema. Panamá está en Centroamérica.
BUT: Use ser to describe where an event is taking place: El concierto es aquí.
B. with some adjectives and all adverbs, to describe states and conditions or a change in a characteristic: Están tristes porque su perro está muerto.
Estamos interesados en el tema. Está bien.
El país está en una situación difícil. Está de moda.
C. with a gerund to express a continuing action: Estamos comiendo. Van a estar durmiendo.
D. with the past participle, which must agree in number and gender, to express a resultant state:
Las ventanas están cerradas.
El reloj está roto. The windows are closed.

SER, from the Latin essere associated with the word essence, is used:
A. to identify, describe or define a subject: El hermano es ingeniero. Es a ella a quien busco. Esto es un problema. Este poema es para mi abuelo. El programa es sobre arte. Es muy fácil.

B. with de to denote origin, material, or ownership: Es de madera. Es del Canadá. Es de Juan.
C. with adjectives that denote inherent, characteristic qualities, including (somewhat surprisingly): pobre, rico, joven, viejo: Nueva York es grande.
D. in expressions of time: Son las tres y media. Hoy es jueves.
E. in impersonal expressions: Es posible saber eso, es importante...

Some adjectives have quite different meanings when used with the two verbs, for example:
estar listo/a to be ready ser lista/o to be bright, quick, intelligent
¿Estás lista, María? María es muy lista.
estar aburrido to be bored ser aburrido to be boring or dull
Estoy aburrido con esta novela. Esta novela es muy aburrida.
