Guga tras su primera victoria en los Estados Unidos
Durante el fin de semana del primero de abril, la raqueta principal brasilera de 23 años Gustavo Kuerten venció a la super estrella Andre Agassi para avanzar a la ronda final del Abierto de Tenis de Ericsson. Kuerten, apodado "Guga" por sus fieles seguidores, desplegó un juego consistente frente a Agassi, a pesar de la ruidosa hinchada presente en el estadio. Fue derrotado por Pete Sampras en una contienda altamente disputada en las finales.

Asesor del presidente haitiano asesinado
El tres de abril, el asesor del presidente, periodista y dueño de una estación de radio, Jean-Leopold Dominique, fue disparado varias veces camino a su trabajo en plena calle de Port-au-Prince. El guardia de seguridad que trabajaba en el edificio también cayó muerto tras los disparos. Se especula que los asesinos fueron motivados políticamente a causa de la creciente disconformidad con la presidencia de René Préval, mandatario por sentencia desde enero de 1999. Se reportan protestas diarias en las calles de Port-au-Prince reclamando al Gobierno convocar elecciones.

Toledo se crió en la pobreza y trabajó de betunero. Eventualmente se adjudicó una beca para estudiar en la Universidad de Stanford en los Estados Unidos. Hoy en día se lo considera el más grande oponente de Fujimori.

Fusión brasilera causa especulación
Tomando en cuenta los últimos sucesos con respecto al caso Antimonopolista contra Microsoft, hemos aprendido que es necesario ser cauteloso con todo esto de adquisiciones y fusiones. A la vez que el gobierno brasilero ha aprobado la fusión de las cervecerías más grandes del Brasil, los antimonopolistas manifiestan que es un atentado a la frágil economía del país. Las dos compañías, Cia. Cervejaria Brahma y Cia. Antartica Paulista mantendrán un 72% del mercado nacional ahora que se han fusionado para formar la Cia. de Bebidas das Americas. Los reguladores aprobaron la fusión en base a la declaración siguiente, pronunciada por Hebe Romano: "No existen hechos en concreto que prueben que la fusión causaría daños al mercado".

Nuevo presidente de la OPEP busca soluciones
El venezolano Alí Rodríguez, nuevo presidente de la OPEP, declaró que el cartel intentará mantener los precios de petróleo en crudo entre los 22 y 28USD. La propuesta de mantener un precio fijo vino por parte de los venezolanos en una reunión de la OPEP a fines de marzo. Rodríguez también manifestó que Venezuela planea incrementar su propia producción de petróleo para contrarrestar el reciente aumento en el precio del mismo.

Guga Goes for His First US Victory
On the weekend of April 1st, 23 year-old Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten beat tennis all-star Andre Agassi to advance to the final round of the Ericsson Open. Kuerten, affectionately known to his fans as "Guga," played a solid game against Agassi amidst the background noise of his vocal Brazilian fans. He lost to Pete Sampras in a grueling match in the finals.

Haitian Presidential Advisor Shot to Death
Presidential advisor, radio station owner and journalist, Jean-Leopold Dominique, was shot several times on a busy street in Port-au-Prince while he was on his way to work on April 3rd. The security guard who was working at the building was also shot and killed. It is speculated that the murders were politically motivated, caused by tensions stemming from the presidency of René Préval, who has ruled by decree since January 1999. It is reported that there are daily protests in the streets of Port-au-Prince because of the government’s failure to hold elections.

A New Twist in Peruvian Politics
The presidential elections in Peru are already set to be controversial as sitting president Alberto Fujimori attempts to win his third election. But he has a new contender to face: Native American Alejandro Toledo has begun a heated campaign aimed at the Peruvian people and their national pride in their roots and heritage. Toledo himself grew up in poverty and worked as a shoeshine boy. He eventually won a writing scholarship to study at Stanford University in the United States. He is now considered to be Fujimori’s main opponent in the presidential race.

Brazilian Merger Causes Speculation
In light of the recent case brought to the Supreme Court regarding the Microsoft Antitrust suit, we have learned that caution pays when dealing with mergers and acquisitions. Although the Brazilian government has approved the merger of the country’s two largest breweries, antitrust advocates are claiming that it could be detrimental to the already fragile economy. The two companies, Cia. Cervejaria Brahma and Cia. Antarctica Paulista, will maintain 72 percent of the national market now that they have merged into Cia. de Bebidas das Americas. The regulators approved the merger based on the following statement made by Hebe Romano, "There are no concrete facts that the merger would harm the market."

OPEC’s New President Looks for a Solution
Venezuelan Alí Rodríguez, the new president of OPEC, has stated that the cartel will attempt to maintain the price range for a barrel of crude oil between US$22 and US$28. The proposal to maintain a fixed price band for oil was proposed by the Venezuelans at the OPEC meeting at the end of March. Rodríguez also stated that Venezuela plans to increase its own oil production to try to offset the recent increase in oil prices.
