of the verb tener:

to express age
Tengo veintidos años.
I am 22 years old.

to indicate possession
Tengo una casa en California.
I have a house in California.

to indicate obligations
Tengo que estudiar mucho.
I have to study a lot.

to express sensations
Tengo calor
I am hot.

to express a desire to do something
Tengo ganas de dormir.
I feel like sleeping.

Gramática
The verb tener is also used
in many other expressions:

tener cuidado - to be careful
Debes tener cuidado.
You should be careful.

tener derecho - to have the right
Tengo el derecho de hablar.
I have the right to speak.

tener éxito - to be successful
Para tener éxito, tengo que estudiar.
To succeed, I must study.

tener la culpa - to be guilty or at fault
No tengo la culpa. - It’s not my fault.

tener prisa - to be in a hurry
Tengo prisa. - I'm in a hurry.

tener razón - to be right
Ella tiene razón. - She is right.

tener suerte - to be lucky
Tengo suerte. - I am lucky.

tener vergüenza - to be embarassed
El tiene verguenza. - He is embarassed.

Gramática
We can use tener with que to express have to
Sentences are formed using the formula below:

tener + que + infinitive = have to

Examples:
Tengo que recordar. - I have to remember.
Tengo que olvidar. - I have to forget.
Tienes que escribir. - You have to write.
Tienes que salir. - You have to leave.

Sentences with "tener"
Quiero saber tener éxito en la escuela. - I want to know how to have success in school.

El gobierno debe tener cuidado. - The government should be careful.
El rey debe tener cuidado con el pueblo. - The king should be careful with the people.

Los niños tienen derecho a divertise. - Children have the right to have fun.
Los políticos no tienen derecho a robar. - Politicians do not have the right to steal.

Debes ayudar a tener éxito los estudiantes. - You should help the students have success.
¿Como puedo tener éxito promocionando productos? - How can I have success promoting products?

¿Quién tiene la culpa? - Who is guilty?
No tengo la culpa. - It's not my fault.
El no tiene la culpa? - He is not guilty.
Todos tenemos la culpa. - We are all guilty.

Ella tiene prisa. - She is in a hurry.
No tenemos prisa. - We are not in a hurry.
Siempre tenemos prisa. - We are always in a hurry.
Ella no tiene prisa por vender su casa. - She is not in a hurry to sell her house.

Si crees que puedes, tienes razón. - If you believe that you can, you are right.
Tienes razón, es mejor hacer las cosas bien. - You are right, it is better to do things well.
Ni Chávez ni Castro tienen razón. - Neither Chávez nor Castro is right.
Nosotros tenemos razón! - We are right!

Ella no tiene suerte con los hombres. - She does not have luck with men.
El tiene suerte de estar vivo. - He is lucky to be alive.
Más vale tener suerte que talento. - It is better to have luck than to have talent.

¡No debes tener vergüenza! - You should not be embarassed!
Alicia no debe tener vergüenza. - Alicia should not be ashamed.
No tenemos vergüenza. - We are not ashamed.
Tenemos vergüenza de nuestros políticos. - We are ashamed of our politicians.

Sentences with "tener+que+infinitivo"
Tengo que comer ensalada. - I have to eat salad.
Tengo que tomar clases en el verano. - I have to take classes in the summer.
Ella tiene que ir a caminar. - She has to go to walk.
Ella tiene que bailar el viernes. - She has to dance on Friday.
Tenemos que ir al cine. - We have to go to the movies.
Tenemos que comer tarde. - We have to eat late.
Ellos tienen que ayudar a su hermano. - They have to help their brother.
Ellas tienen que ayudar a madre. - They have to help their mother.
Él tiene que salir temprano. - He has to leave early.
Él tiene que llegar a las diez de la mañana. - He has to arrive at 10:00 AM
