Gramática
Direct object pronouns are sometimes used for clarity or emphasis.
They can be used for something or someone previously mentioned.

Examples:

¿Me veía? - Were you seeing me?
Te oía. - I was hearing you.
Lo conocía. - I used to know him. or I knew you.
Lo conocía a él. - I used to know him.
Lo conocía a usted. - I used to know you.
Yo me miraba en el espejo. - I was looking at myself in the mirror.

te - you (singular)

lo - him, you, it (singular)

la - her, you, it (singular)

nos - us (plural)

os - you, familiar (plural)

los - them, you (plural)

las - them, you (plural)

Sentences
Yo quería la pelota. - I wanted the ball.
La quería. - I wanted it.

Leía el periódico. - I was reading the newspaper.
Lo leía. - I was reading it.

Ella compraba pollo. - She was buying chicken.
Ella lo compraba. - She was buying it.

Veía a los niños. - I was watching the children.
Los veía. - I was watching them.

Buscaba mi libro. - I was looking for my book.
Lo buscaba. - I was looking for it.

El señor compraba una mesa. - The gentleman was buying a table.
El señor la compraba. - The gentleman was buying it.

La niña vendía limonada. - The girl was selling lemonade.
La niña la vendía. - The girl was selling it.

Elena daba una contribución. - Elena was giving a contribution.
Elena la daba. - Elena was giving it.

Juan comía un burrito. - Juan was eating a burrito.
Juan lo comía. - Juan was eating it.

Rosa cocinaba puerco. - Rosa was cooking pork.
Rosa lo cocinaba. - Rosa was cooking it.

Yo veía a mis primas. - I was watching my cousins.
Las veía. - I watching them.

Mis primas no lo conocían a Juan. - My cousins didn't used to know Juan.
Mis primas no lo conocían. - My cousins didn't used to know him.

Mis hermanos conocían a mis amigos. - My brothers used to know my friends.
Mis hermanos los conocían. - My brothers used to know them.

Nosotros veíamos a los muchachos. - We were watching the boys.
Nosotros los veíamos. - We were watching them.

Ellos querían dar un regalo. - They wanted to give a gift.
Ellos lo querían dar. - They wanted to give it.

Carlos mataba al tigre. - Carlos was killing the tiger.
Carlos lo mataba. - Carlos was killing it.

Isabel brincaba la cuerda. - Isabel was jumping the rope.
Isabel la brincaba. - Isabel was jumping it.

Tú visitabas a Elena. - You were visiting Elena.
Tú la visitabas. - You were visiting her.

Tus padres visitaban a Juan. - Your parents were visiting Juan.
Tus padres lo visitaban. - Your parents were visiting him.

Yo oía a mis hermanas en la casa. - I was hearing my sisters in the house.
Yo las oía en la casa. - I was hearing them in the house.

Notes for the Tutor

  • Normally the DIRECT OBJECT refers to things, but it can also refer to people. Remember the DIRECT OBJECT answers the questions 'what?' or 'whom?'
  • The student should repeat these simple sentences to practice vocabulary and improve pronunciation.
