I can't say something about accomodations, but its a very nice and friendly school (they also run a social projekt) and the owner of the school is a very nice guy. A very good atmosphere. A little but: better for beginners, because the first language for the teachers is usually mayan and the second is spanish. But most of the teachers study spanish, so their spanish is quiet good and in every case fluent. The garden where the lessons are holden is beautifull. Its worth it!

I had a fantastic experience at San Pedro Spanish School. I went there on a friends recommendation and was very pleased with my experience. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to others interested in fantastic Spanish lessons by knowledgeable and enthusiastic teachers in a beautiful location (the garden classroom is amazing, not to mention the lake!). While San Pedro doesn't have quite the dominating numbers of Spanish schools as Xela (Quetzaltenango) or Antigua, don't let others try to convince you that you would be sacrificing quality by going to San Pedro (which people in Antigua, especially, will try to do...). I had 2 different teachers, and both were energetic, engaging, and knowledgeable. The school organized enjoyable get togethers, outings, and conversation clubs, and the whole experience felt much more closely knit and family-like than other schools I tried in Guatemala. My homestay family was fantastic. And the School itself was very involved and concerned about students having a positive experience. If one were studying at San Pedro Spanish School and something wasn't working out (personality clash with teacher, etc.), the school would go way out of its way to immediately address the problem. They are well aware that you could take your investment elsewhere, and they will work hard to make sure you are quite satisfied with your experience. My Spanish improved significantly and I learned a great deal about the local history and culture as well. As I understand it locally, (and based on other students experiences), San Pedro Spanish School and the Cooperative Spanish School are by far the best places to study in San Pedro. San Pedro itself is an interesting place, with a healthy tourist industry near the lake, and a more traditional village setting up above. If students are motivated to meet with locals and really practice Spanish, San Pedro is a great place for them. If students prefer to interact more with tourists (and not practice Spanish as much), they will also find that easily accessible. As in most places (cities our tourist spots alike) in Guatemala, this choice is up to the motivations and goals of the students. If one is concerned about getting sucked into the tourist crowd and not practicing Spanish (due to weak self discipline?), San Pedro might not be the best city for you...maybe try Xela or a smaller village somewhere in the highlands (Nebaj or Todos Santos). Disciplined students, or those looking to combine touristy stuff with study will find no better place than San Pedro.

I had an excellent experience at San Pedro Spanish School. This school offers wonderful customer service, excellent and precise instruction, and treats you like you are a family member. I had Juan as my teacher and Juan is more than a teacher, he is also a community organizer. In fact, all the teachers at San Pedro are not only amazing teachers, but are very involved with local community projects. Other great teachers: Lucas, Javier, Elijio (sp?), Rafael... and others... The setting of the school is beautiful, right by the lake, under palapas... sometimes for part of our lessons we would walk by the lake and converse in Spanish about the geography, flora and fauna of the area... I loved it... My host family was really amazing too... the family is Gonzalez-Ramirez. They were very warm and welcoming and spoke to me only in Spanish. They do speak some English too. The food made by my family was excellent, fresh fish from the lake, fresh, natural sauces over meat, eggs, pasta, or rice. Fresh vegetable soups and fruits. I loved it!! I would go back in a heart-beat.

Highly recommended!!! San Pedro is a small quiet town, but has a vibrant tourist night life. Maybe not the best place if you are looking for a total immersion experience, but the school is absolutely beautiful, the teachers are amazing and there are wonderful after school activities.

I spent 3 weeks summer of 2010 in very intensive advanced Spanish at San Pedro Spanish School. I was in need of a learning situation that really stretched me and would give me a true boost towards fluency. I am really happy with what I got at San Pedro Spanish School. My maestro Javier was really fantastic...with it, totally in charge of the teaching and totally engaged in it. I can honestly say that of the 4 hours we spent together each day none of the time was wasted. We really worked! The schools facilities are really nice with the extra added benefit of wireless internet in the common area. I stayed in an apartment the school owns and had breakfast (delicious) every morning at the school before classes began. The lake is beautiful beyond description. I can honestly say that although I had great misgivings about being able to get the level and quality I really wanted, I am totally happy and completely recommend this school. Thanks to Javier, Ramon and everyone at the school for doing a great job!

Excellent Spanish school with a great location on the lake, a friendly atmosphere, professionally managed, and with lots of fun activities in the afternoons and weekends. Our homestay with the Mendez family was a highlight. Overall, a wonderful experience.

I came to La Cooperativa in response to the positive reviews from this site and the Thorn Tree Forum, and while the environment is magnificent, the pueblo charming, and my host family incredible, I can't say much for the quality of the Spanish school itself. I had spent two weeks at ICA, a Spanish school in Xela (brrr, cold! But great school), where the teachers would befriend the students, go out, and encourage their language practice in a friendly setting over a cerveza or two. The teachers at La Cooperativa spoke to each other in Tzutuhuil, and ONLY spoke to each other during the breaks. It was obvious that teaching Spanish was their paid job, and that the students were just students. As a result, the English-speaking students cling to each other during breaks and afternoon activities. Not as engaging as the other school. My Spanish instruction followed a photocopied textbook, and American-style language instruction where the student recites sentences from exercises so that the teacher can mark a topic "learned." It was difficult to retain grammar lessons in this way, when tenses are taught for twenty minutes and forgotten. Granted, I did get the opportunity to engage in some fascinating conversations with my teacher about women's rights, poverty, political corruption, food habits, and education, and these were, in my eyes, more valuable than a grammar lesson. San Pedro is a beautiful place. You won't beat the location, but I would seriously consider what you want before choosing this school.
